12 towers, 6 damage types: the complete matrix guide

Every tower matched against every armor class, every damage type against every faction — the reference matrix our coaches use, condensed for the field.

OTTTD's depth hides in one table: twelve tower types firing six damage types at enemies with armor classes that gate what's allowed to hurt them. Learn the matrix and the campaign turns from reaction into planning.

The six damage types

Kinetic is the baseline — cheap, reliable, stopped dead by armor. Incendiary adds burn-over-time that chews unarmored swarms and keeps ticking through adds phases. Cryo doesn't kill, it loans you time — slowing stacks that multiply every other tower's effective range. Energy ignores most conventional armor and is the faction-agnostic premium option. Explosive brings AoE for clustered waves and structure damage for boss phases. Toxic is the specialist — stacking damage-over-time that shreds the organic enemies dominating Nightmare's roster.

Damage type effects on different enemies

Tower archetypes by role

The twelve types cluster into four roles. Point defense (gun emplacements, railguns) kills single targets at range. Area control (mortars, explosive batteries) owns clusters. Support (frost projectors, slow fields, buff rigs) multiplies everything else — never more than two per grid, never fewer than one. Anti-air (missile batteries, energy spires) covers the dimension's flying units; skipping them is how Eyeball Avenue and the shark fight end runs. Build roles, not towers — a grid missing a role fails the wave designed to punish that gap.

Field note

Sell-and-rebuild is the hidden seventh damage type — repositioning mid-wave to match the incoming armor class is worth more than any single tower's upgrade tier.

Faction matchups

Steamcrust's mechanical crustaceans carry armor that gates kinetic and demands energy or explosive answers — build accordingly or watch bullets spark off shells. Nightmare's Horror faction runs the opposite math: organic targets that resist conventional damage but melt under toxic stacking and incendiary pressure. Robot units in both dimensions carry their own resistance profile — the update notes famously had to rebalance them after players found the trivial counter. Mixed-faction missions like The Overmind Rift demand hybrid grids; that's the campaign's final exam.

There are no bad towers in OTTTD — only towers fighting enemies they were never built for.

Key takeaways

Short on time? This is the manual condensed to a sticky note for your monitor.

  • Six damage types: kinetic, incendiary, cryo, energy, explosive, toxic
  • Build roles — point defense, area control, support, anti-air
  • Steamcrust armor gates kinetic; bring energy and explosive
  • Nightmare's organics melt under toxic and incendiary stacks
  • Mid-wave repositioning beats upgrade tier — the grid is fluid

Asked after this manual

The questions commanders send the desk after reading this guide.

The frost projector — slow multiplies every other tower's output, making it the highest leverage pad in almost every grid. It's boring and it's correct.

Tap the unit — armor class and resistances display in the unit card. Check the wave preview before the drop; that's what the intel panel exists for.

Only if the wave list includes flyers — but assuming none is how runs end. The wave preview names flying units; Eyeball Avenue and Jaws of the Sky made examples of everyone who skipped it.
